Artist of the Month, SonKiss'd!

This month we are featuring SonKiss'd dance troupe that hails from Houston, TX

How did SonKiss'd form?

Sonkiss'd Dance Theater Started off with a group of guys with a true passion for Christ and entertainment who decided to create a platform through dance to inspire and create experiences so powerful audiences don't leave the same.

What challenges and successes have you encountered?

We put all the challenges and successes in one category and call it experiences lol. We're constantly learning, growing, adding and taking away. A challenge can easily turn into a success once you figure out a way to over come and success can easily become a challenge if you stop being innovative and presenting fresh ideas, especially in arts and entertainment.

What ways can the community support SonKiss'd?

I think the best way the community can support us is to continue supporting our concerts and events and reposting our videos and fliers. We want to see the world and we want the world to see us!

Colors of Houston

Vox Culture will be hosting its 7th anniversary fundraiser on the evening of Sunday, September 27th, 2015 from 6:00PM-9:00PM at Chateaux Crystale. Our theme this year, and the title of our event, is The Colors of Houston. The event will feature a range of Houston-based artists from the realms of dance, spoken word poetry, live painting, and more. Vox Culture’s fundraisers are unique in that we leave our participants with a message on the state of the world through various forms of creative expression.

The Colors of Houston will feature the numerous ethnicities that make up the United States and examine how we can find unity in diversity. For example, a live painter will be present to illustrate this by asking the audience, “What color represents you?” With the issue of race dominating headlines over the past year, we believe there is no better time to celebrate diversity and promote acceptance. We hope you would join us in this endeavor.

GOAL: The Colors of Houston will help fund Vox Culture through 2015 and into the 2016 fiscal year. Funds raised will support Vox Culture's partner of the year, the Houston Independent School District (HISD), with whom we are working to alleviate challenges within Education, specifically literacy. The funds will also support our projects for 2016, where we will be addressing the issue of Economic Development amongst under-served neighborhoods. Finally, funds raised at The Colors of Houston will help support staff, artist honorariums, technical equipment, and internship opportunities, as well as bring us closer towards the goal of creating scholarships for high school students seeking to pursue educational advancement or careers in arts or advocacy related fields.

SPONSORSHIP: Interested in sponsoring The Colors of Houston?

We are offering several opportunities to sponsor our fundraiser. To find out how, and what is received with each option, please send a message to viktor.kopic@voxculture.org.

What does Art offer to Education?

Arguably arts as a means of academic and personal development is an important element of any education. Still, it is often assumed that Arts in education is only for people aspire to become artists. The challenge faced by educators then is to justify the existence of arts in the school curriculum on the basis of its contribution in boosting academic achievement in subjects such as literature, physics, math and ‘non-art subjects’. As students face the daunting task of learning new content, educators are poised to determine effective teaching methods where students not only acquire knowledge of a specific subject but improve self-awareness, self-esteem, inclusion, creativity and a greater level of comfort working with their peers.

While some teaching methods may have little to do with art, it has been argued that arts-based methods are integral to expression where students have difficulties describing experiences and feelings in words. The integration of psychological and educational teaching methods with a variety of creative therapies such  drama, music, painting, and  photography is Informed by contemporary research, and meet the objectives of the principles drawn from the Positive Psychology, Social and Emotional Learning framework .

To emphasize, general education reforms, such as the No Child Left Behind Act (2002) hold schools accountable for standardized test scores in mathematics and reading while emphasizing the four pillars within the bill:

  • Accountability: To ensure those students who are disadvantaged, achieve academic proficiency.

  • Flexibility: Allows school districts flexibility in how they use federal education funds to improve student achievement.

  • Research-based education: Emphasizes educational programs and practices that have been proven effective through scientific research.

  • Parent options: Increases the choices available to the parents of students attending Title I schools.

While the quality of teaching and inter-personal skills of the teacher matter, the increase in students from culturally diverse backgrounds means that educators often have to revise their own teaching practices to accommodate and reflect social, cultural, religious difference and  boost academic achievement. Brainstorming for example may enable students of all ability and cultural background to introduce ideas in a nonjudgmental context. Teachers are able to modify the content, process and teaching methods to suit an individual student’s need. To achieve this, they use indirect approaches to learning such as in-cooperating arts into learning. For example, Helene L.Perry changes the content of math problems for middle school students to reflect their personal interests, streets in their neighborhoods, and interactions in their social lives. Educators use collective judgment based on related research and informed knowledge on current educational approaches which have produced results.

Nonetheless, the usefulness of the approaches that schools implement within the context of the educational system given the available resources is debatable. Even though arts-based methods - the use of play and other creative activities have long been incorporated into learning there is still a need for more research on the effectiveness of these approaches, how they are achieved and how they can be sustained.

Undoubtedly, certain conditions may foster or impede students learning and coordination. For example, schools can make little difference in overcoming the background factors that negatively affect a student’s academic development/achievement. They include student’s truancy, lack of interest, and the complexity of the content of study.

More research is needed if educators are to produce a powerful case for positioning the arts at the center of primary and secondary school curriculums as a means to achieving the goals set out in educational reforms. To succeed in the long term educators require commitment, sufficient resources, and a policy context that allow for unconventional teaching and learning methods to thrive.

Artist of the Month, Miss Ruby Rivera!

This month we are featuring Miss Ruby Rivera, an HISD teacher by day and fierce salsa dancer by night. I had the pleasure to ask Miss Rivera a few questions about the Texas Salsa Congress and her involvement in the arts.

What got you involved in the arts?

For as long as I can remember I loved dance, music, painting etc. I lived in a single parent home most of my life and thankful that my mother put me in many after school programs in Houston. These programs introduced me to the arts and gave me a foundation that would just continue to grow as I got older.

How did you get started with the Texas Salsa Congress?

Although I was born in Houston I went to college at The University of Texas at Austin. I was living in Austin and moved to Houston to work in admissions for UT in 2000. Shortly after I moved to Houston, I went to my first salsa club in and fell in love with the dance, and knew I wanted to be part of doing something to contribute to the salsa/mambo dance community.

What challenges  and success have you encountered with the Texas salsa congress ?

Challenges, you might need a book not a newsletter!  In general, the salsa community was small compared to what it is now so one of the challenges was to build the community. In the beginning it was very grass roots to clubs to want to support salsa nights or work with someone who was female in a very male dominated industry. In addition, a huge challenge was to sell Houston, Texas to the world since we compete against cities like Miami, Chicago, New York which people don't need a lot of convincing to travel to those cities. I had to work on highlighting Houston as a city and also our wonderful dance community here in Texas!

Success-in 2016 we will celebrate our 12th Anniversary of the Texas Salsa Congress! We are now one of the oldest salsa congresses in the US. Also, in general to see all the dancers who have come to Houston from all over the globe see what Houston is all about and also provide great shows and instruction for our community to grow as been very rewarding.

What ways can the community support the Texas Salsa Congress?

As an organization we are always looking for support with anything to can help our growth as an organization and event.  We continue to support Houston through organizing events such as Latin Beats at the Downtown Aquarium which provides a free night over the summer for families.   We can always use donations, sponsorships, volunteers for the event or volunteers that can offer help with marketing, website, or any areas of expertise that might help with the Texas Salsa Congress.

The Texas Salsa Congress is honored to be able to host event that showcases Texas and the arts. We can't wait to see all of you on the dance floor at the Westin Oaks-Galleria March 10-13, 2016!
