SEARCH Holiday Party - Sat 12/3

Meet the Wonderful Residents of SEARCH!

"The site where Vox will be throwing a Christmas Party is a permanent housing facility for formerly homeless people called Jackson Hinds Garden.  Many of the residents, although they have a roof over their heads, continue to struggle with issues that plagued them when they were on the streets: untreated mental illness, substance abuse, financial instability, and lack of social support, to name a few.  SEARCH received a grant a couple of years ago to partner with Jackson Hinds, which allowed SEARCH to place a team of staff on-site to work with the residents on these issues.  SEARCH staff provide intensive case management, life skills and substance abuse recovery groups, crisis intervention, and community-building support to the residents at Jackson Hinds.

Vox's Christmas Party is going to be a fun, exciting breath of fresh air for the residents at Jackson Hinds!  For a community that has experienced deep trauma, marginalization, and voicelessness in society, having a group of people come in to spend the day with them will mean a lot.  This is a great opportunity for Vox to learn hands-on about the nuances of homelessness and to make a difference in a very personal and creative way!" ~ Phoebe Wong, SEARCH Staff

Lots of Warm Feet! 385 Pairs of Socks Donated @ Salsa Event

Crazy socks, dancing shoes, and 385 pairs of socks raised for SEARCH Homeless Services at the "Knock Your Socks Off" Salsa Event!

Many thanks to DJ / Artist Erock1 for setting the ambiance for the evening with mixed beats, splash paintings and party lights!

The highlight of the evening was definitely the salsa lesson taught by Texas Salsa Congress instructors, Darnell Allen and Ruby Rivera. The humorous duo kept the crowd laughing and in good spirits with favorite terms such as "truck-driver spin". By the end of the hour tutorial, the students were ready to show-off their salsa moves on the dance floor.

Swirling, twirling, chips and dips...literally and...literally. Thanks to Lupe's Tortilla for the donation of chips, salsa and amazing guacamole!

Salsa, marengue, western swing and hip-hop! Solo, partners, and of course group dances including "wobble wobble" and "cupid shuffle" rocked the night.

What makes Vox Culture events unique is its thoughtful combination of creativity and cause. During the evening, the audience was introduced to an overview of SEARCH and a short video clip that shared some of the personal journeys of individuals who have been helped by this organization. A vital part the event planning process was finding fun ways to raise awareness about homelessness and help folks get involved. These action steps are as simple as contributing to the sock drive, buying a raffle ticket that benefited the cause, or signing up to volunteer at the SEARCH Holiday Party. Special thanks to SEARCH staff, Phoebe Wong, for being at the event to help answer questions about the organization and about the issue of homelessness.

Want to continue helping in this social issue? Vox is throwing a Holiday Party for Jackson Hinds Gardens residents on Saturday, Dec 3rd. Come celebrate with us and meet the people we are serving. Sign-up to volunteer.

Lastly, can't enough of salsa dancing? Continue to visit Texas Salsa Congress and join them for their annual conference coming up in March! Stay tuned for details...

Best dressed + CRAZY SOCKS.

Here's to...lots of warm feet!
